Agromo R&D project selected by ESA

We are excited to announce that Agromo Ltd. will execute an innovative research and development project of Earth Observation in early 2018, after it was selected in a competitive call for tenders by the European Space Agency. The call is the second in the Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS) program for Bulgaria. The main goal of the project is to develop better observational services for agricultural producers and farmers using Europe’s EO satellites. Executing this project will allow us to improve our services for modeling and forecasting crop development and yield using remote sensing observations.

Executing the PHENOFUSE Project

We are excited to give some details of the project Development of Plant Phenophase Prediction Models Using Intercalibrated Sentinel-2 Vegetation Indices and Sentinel-1 Radar Observations Over Bulgaria, or PHENOFUSE for short. In this project, funded by the European Space Agency, we will: Research and develop an innovative methodology for the characterization and prediction of the onsets and duration of growth seasons for various agricultural and forestry species in Bulgaria. Research and develop models for calibration between Sentinel-2 vegetation indices and Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar data, in order to increase the cadence of observations and quality of predictions of our innovative methodology; Create and apply a software platform for aggregating and analyzing Sentinel data, to support the process of methodology and model development and validation.

Monitoring your crops, in sun and clouds

Most agricultural monitoring platforms rely on optical observations, which already provide rich information about the state and development of agricultural crops. The problem is that such observations are sparse during the periods when they matter most - in spring and autumn. This is due to the extensive cloud cover typical of these periods of most dynamic crop growth. Not enough observations means less informed decisions on crop management, increased risk of damage from weather and pests, and more uncertainty in your economic planning. Our innovative proprietary technology already allows us to break this barrier, by fusing optical hyperspectral satellite observations with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations from the Sentinel-1 EO satellite. The graph here shows full-season optical vegetation index (VI) time series of a winter wheat field from Sentinel-2 data (dots with error bars). Overlaid on top a synthetic time series of the same VI, generated from radar (Sentinel-1) observations of this field. Using our technology, we can more than double the number of observations that enter our monitoring service - providing you with a significantly better temporal coverage for every location and crop.
